What is wisdom? Where is it found?

by Jose HC on January 18, 2011

“But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living. The deep says, ‘It is not in me’; And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ It cannot be purchased for gold, Nor can silver be weighed for its price. It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx or sapphire. Neither gold nor crystal can equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold. No mention shall be made of coral or quartz, For the price of wisdom is above rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold. “From where then does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding? It is hidden from the eyes of all living, And concealed from the birds of the air. Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’ God understands its way, And He knows its place. For He looks to the ends of the earth, And sees under the whole heavens, To establish a weight for the wind, And apportion the waters by measure. When He made a law for the rain, And a path for the thunderbolt, Then He saw wisdom and declared it; He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out. And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ” http://bible.us/Job28.12.NKJV

Another beautiful passage from the book of Job.   The question… where can wisdom be found is answered here for us.

How many times have you desires of been seeking wisdom?   Wisdom is different than knowledge and cannot be acquired… it is given to is instead.

Amazing God

by Jose HC on January 18, 2011

“He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it. He covers the face of His throne, And spreads His cloud over it. He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness. The pillars of heaven tremble, And are astonished at His rebuke. He stirs up the sea with His power, And by His understanding He breaks up the storm. By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent. Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?” http://bible.us/Job26.7.NKJV

Just wanted to quote this from my morning readings.   We are left in awe at His power and might.   The amazing thing is that His love is just as great.   In fact He is love and He cares for each one of us in the personal and intimate way.

Think about that…  He who hung the earth on nothing is interested in you.   Not social media you…  not work you…  just YOU.   Just as you are.

40 Días de Ayuno

by Jose HC on January 5, 2011

Resting after a busy December

by Jose HC on December 18, 2010

December has been a busy month.  The Lord’s provision has been good to our family and it is amazing to see His hand on our lives.  Daniel and I are just sitting here at the kitchen table drinking a some milk/yogurt/banana concoction that my wife made.  I was checking all of the different blogs and decided to drop a little note.

Over the next few days we will post some of the Christmas pictures from church.

We will be at the church in Mexican Town (Detroit) over the holidays.  Every time I go there the Lord does something in my heart and confirms the fact that I would like to do more for Him.  Then reality hits when we are back in Mississauga… :)

We Are Not Waiting

by Jose HC on November 19, 2010

For a few weeks the whole education debate and what the best method for educating, teaching, instructing, nurturing our children has been silently floating in the back of my mind. We homeschool my son. A decision for which we have taken much flack and for which we are constantly criticized. Yet… we know and feel and are 100% certain that this is the right decision… for us.

I have not formulated an opinion on the broader educational debate yet. And of course the American context is completely different than the Canadian one. I believe this short video (click here) is part of my journey. Not sure where this will take me (us)… but it is certainly going somewhere.

Let me be honest with you…

by Jose HC on October 2, 2010

I started this online journal mostly because I wanted to keep a record of certain things going on in my life. It has been a neglected space for the most part but today I feel like writing a short update. And more than being honest with you, I am being honest with myself and I just want to document this somewhere.

This is the thing… I can’t control the urge and the desire to serve God full time anymore. I have zero passion for anything else. I can’t concentrate at work and I can’t stop thinking about working for Him. The only thing that gets my heart racing and my blood flowing is the idea of serving Christ full time. This ‘feeling’ started back in December of 2009. It is probably the time that I stopped running and was quiet long enough to hear my heart and His voice. It has only increased since then… it keeps getting bigger and bigger.

More later. Daniel woke up and we are going out for breakfast.

God and the Gospel

by Jose HC on September 20, 2010

Too often, and for too long, American “Christianity” has been a political agenda in search of a gospel useful enough to accommodate it. There is a liberation theology of the Left, and there is also a liberation theology of the Right, and both are at heart mammon worship. The liberation theology of the Left often wants a Barabbas, to fight off the oppressors as though our ultimate problem were the reign of Rome and not the reign of death. The liberation theology of the Right wants a golden calf, to represent religion and to remind us of all the economic security we had in Egypt. Both want a Caesar or a Pharaoh, not a Messiah.

I read this by Dr. Moore with tears in my eyes. So much of it rang true and so much of it made my heart ache (because it is true). But he finishes it with a bang when he says “It’s sad to see so many Christians confusing Mormon politics or American nationalism with the gospel of Jesus Christ. But, don’t get me wrong, I’m not pessimistic. Jesus will build his church, and he will build it on the gospel. He doesn’t need American Christianity to do it. Vibrant, loving, orthodox Christianity will flourish, perhaps among the poor of Haiti or the persecuted of Sudan or the outlawed of China, but it will flourish.”

Amen.

Amen!

Answering God’s Call

by Jose HC on September 15, 2010

On Friday at the opening of our Bible School I shared a little bit about God’s call with the children and the adults.  For this I used Samuel answering the call as a young boy…

1 Samuel 3 (New International Version)

The LORD Calls Samuel

1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.

3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.

4 Then the LORD called Samuel.  Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

6 Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD : The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

8 The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”  Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.

9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”  Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

11 And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears of it tingle.

12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end.

13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them.

14 Therefore, I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ”

15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,

16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”  Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.”

18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.”

19 The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of his words fall to the ground.

20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD.

21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.

The message was purposely simple.  I am of the opinion that simpler and straightforward is always better for children and adults alike.  At the end of the day it is the Holy Spirit who takes the Word and ‘activates’ in in our hearts.

I started by asking what a ‘call’ means and then I covered the following points quickly and conversationally (by this I mean that I talked with them and not at them).  Here are the points for my future reference:

The World Today

v.1 … How would you compare verse 1 to the world today?

  • Are people listening to God has to say?
  • Is God talking?

The World’s Leaders Today

v.2 … What does this verse tell us about the leaders of the world?

  • They can’t see right?

Samuel’s Availability

v.3 … What do you see in this verse about Samuel?

Samuel needed to know God first

v.7 … What does this verse tell us about Samuel?

Samnuel answers the call

v. 10 … what does Samuel do here?

Samuel is reponsible with God’s Word

v.19 …Didn’t let it fall to the ground… he listened, he lived it and he shared it.

Samuel is Used Powerfully by God

v. 20 & 21

Samuel answered the call and God was with him and used him in a powerful way.

This is our prayer and our plan for this School year… for each one of you. That you will hear God’s voice, that you will answer the call and that you will be used powerfully by Him.

Of course … the irony is that I am struggling with answering a call right now.  I am seeking confirmation … and I don’t want to tread my own path.  I just want to make sure it is the door God wants me to walk through.

Measured Excitement

by Jose HC on September 14, 2010

This picture was taken back in March of this year.  I was going to a meeting and Nena and Daniel were on their way somewhere.  This is Daniel’s best attempt at being excited without overflowing…

Measured excitement at the trip ahead

This picture has been slightly enhanced with Picnik.
